GLOUCESTERSHIRE TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Ashford Veterans Table Tennis Competition

Christmas cobwebs were blown away by some of Gloucestershire’s top Veteran table tennis players, Dave Harvey, Dave Adamson, Alan Smith and Gordon Shaw who travelled to Ashford Table Tennis Club in Middlesex to compete in a Veterans competition.

The competition is initially based on a grouping system where three players all compete against each other in order to establish which band of the competition stage you are entered into.

Dave Harvey in his usual style won his group and was entered into band A. He stormed his way through the next few rounds until he met Fred Dove in the semi final where Harvey lost in three straight sets. A surprising exit for Harvey, who is ranked 14 in England whereas Dove is currently ranked at 54.

Dave Adamson and Alan Smith were runners up in the grouping stage and were entered into the band B competition. Both Adamson and Smith cruised through the round to reach the semi final stage, fortunately in opposite halves of the draw. Luck was not on the side of Adamson in the semi final, he was put out three sets to one by Ramesh Bhalla who is ranked 109 in England 25 places above Adamson. Smith however won through to the final to face Bhalla in the final of the band B competition. Despite Smiths best efforts he was not able to overcome the skills of Bhalla who won the final in three straights sets.

Gordon Shaw was placed third in his group and entered into the band C event. He won his first round game however lost in round two in a five set game.

As a result of this GORDON BOUGHT THE BEERS!!!
