Association Cups & Trophy Awards 2006-2007

Gloucester Table Tennis Association staged the annual finals and presentation night at Churchdown Community centre on Friday 18th April to celebrate the end of a fantastic season and to award the league and closed tournament winners.

Four finals were staged the results were as follows.

Mixed Doubles
Winners Tony Stead and Ann Barnes
Runners up Darren Griffin and Lesley Dewick

The combination of Tony Stead’s defensive style with Ann Barnes’s attacking play was too much for Griffin and Dewick who were never able to get into a rhythm in this match. Stead and Barnes cruised to a win in three games to retain their title.

Open Doubles
Winners Tony Stead and William Dawe

Runners up Darren Griffin and Mike Kiff

Dawe and Stead, who have been doubles partners for years, tactically out played Griffin and Kiff, in this magnificent match. There were some fantastic hard hitting rallies in this final at the end of which, Dawe and Stead emerge winners in three straight sets. Dawe and Stead have won this title four times now.

Ladies Singles
Winner Ann Barnes

Runner up Melanie Garlick

Ann Barnes, who was still on a high from success in the mixed doubles, cruised to a win in the singles against Melanie Garlick. Barnes demonstrated with ease a fantastic slow loop, which assisted her to her three straight set win. Barnes retains her title.

Open Singles
Winner Darren Griffin

Runner up William Dawe

In the clash of Gloucester City’s finest players Darren Griffin emerged out on top. This was not a one sided encounter as William Dawe put in a fine performance. There were some superb attacking rallies from Dawe which put Griffin on the back foot. There two experienced table tennis thoroughbreds put on a great show for all to admire. Darren Griffin retains his title as the Open singles winner a title that he has now won on 21 occasions.
