Richard Johnson, Andy Taylor and Vidas Rimkus of Redcliffe College
were victorious when they attended Tuffley Community Centre to compete
against Rudford comprising of Pete Humble, Trevor Seymour and Gordon
Wallace.
Johnson, Taylor and Rimkus of division three began the evening
with a 58 point advantage over their division 2 opponents, but this
was whittled down over four games to only a 28 point advantage after
four games thanks to some steady play from Rudford and Rimkus suffering
from an existing injury during the match.
During match five, Johnson played a tight, controlled game to win
all 4 sets against Trevor Seymour, extending Redcliffe's lead back
to 47, which was the turning point of the match.
Humble, Seymour and Wallace could only claw back a few points in
the next three matches, which left Humble with an immense task in
the final game against Johnson.
The final game was incredible, with one extraordinary rally which
saw the ball hit the net-cord 5 times, with only the fifth one finally
winning the point for Humble. However despite the best efforts of
Humble there was never really any doubt, which side would emerge
triumphant, and after it became mathematically impossible for Rudford
to win. With the pressure off both players the spectators were entertained
with some incredible rallies.
The final score was Redcliffe 373 v Rudford 342.
Overall the key to Redcliffe's success on the night lay in their
ability to come back after shaky starts in many of the matches,
demonstrated most obviously when Andy Taylor lost the first set
of the 8th match 0-11 against Gordon, but then came back to win
the following 3 sets.
Altogether it was a very enjoyable evening played in a good spirit
by both teams.
The handicap competition is played over nine games with each player
competing against each other over four sets. At the end of the night
the points scored are totalled up and the team with the most points
is declared the winner. The competition commenced in October with
40 teams battling it out for the title.
