Midland League (2009-2010 Season)

WEST MIDLANDS LEAGUE – JUNIORS - 2009/2010

Coach: Dave Gough
Team: Nick Walker, George Evans, Ben Roberts
Date: 6 Dec 2009
Result: Oxford  3  v  Gloucester   7

Gloucester Juniors are off the mark in the Midlands League following a 7-3 away triumph at Oxford.

Ben Roberts was first up for Gloucester and he got the team off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over Ryan Gibbons, playing a nice mixture of shots which he later followed up with another convincing 3–0 win over Jonah Stott.

Nick Walker also had two wins on the day and showed strong character when trailing in the fifth game to opponent Ryan Gibbons.  Gibbons had pegged back Nick’s two game advantage and looked to have all the momentum and confidence as they turned around at the midpoint of the final game. Nick however stayed calm on the crucial points and turned the tide back in his favour taking the last five points consecutively.

After coming close in recent matches there were also a couple of wins for George Evans.  In his match with Ryan Gibbons, following some words of wisdom from Coach Dave Gough, George changed tactics and successfully demonstrated an alternative style of play and even produced... wait for it.... a chop shot!!! Ironically, George probably played his best table tennis in the match he lost to Anthony Howgego who remained undefeated on the day without losing a single game.

Match of the day took place in the doubles where Ben and George managed to reverse the momentum after their 2 – 0 lead had been wiped out, winning the fifth conclusively 11 – 3 in a match which produced some excellent entertaining rallies.

Onwards and upwards!
