West Midlands League (2010-2011 Season)

WEST MIDLANDS LEAGUE – JUNIORS - 2010/2011

Team: Hamza Bham, Ben Roberts, Elliot King
Date: 9 January 2011
Result: Leamington  5   v  Gloucester   5

In the final few days this match had been moved from 2pm, to 1pm, to 12pm, 11 am and finally to 10:45 but with hopes of a 10:30 start. I explained how this early start could prove tricky for certain members of the team who suffer from ‘Sticky Mattress Syndrome’ but decided to take the risk anyway.

As it turned out I had to eat my words as this team member was not only up he was actually waiting on the doorstep as I arrived.... 10 minutes early... (just in case)... my apology accepted we proceeded on our way.

On paper this was a tremendous result, although in reality Leamington could only field two players due to a moped accident the evening before. That said, their number one Luke Spencer had recently won both the U15 and U18 Titles in a 1* Tournament at Cirencester and so the task ahead was still a stiff one.

Hamza was first up and won the first game of the day and although he lost the next three he finished knowing that he was not too far away from their number one. He then proceeded to win his other match against Solomon Hayes in four games that were all clinched by the narrow margin of two points.

Ben won his match with Solomon in three straight games and then proceeded to also take a game off Luke, playing some excellent table tennis during the course of the match.

Elliot lost a close five game match with Solomon and although he also lost to Luke in three straight games he provided what was probably the best Gloucester performance of the day in this match. Staying as close to the table as possible, he blocked all of Luke’s heavy topspin shots with excellent precision, leaving Luke with as little reaction time as possible which forced him to produce the quality, that unfortunately for us on the day, he was more than capable of.

Man down or not, much better than last season’s 10 - 0 home defeat where we managed a grand total of two solitary games.
