Match Reports - Week Thirteen

Division 1

Rudford ‘C’ 0
Highnam ‘A’ 10

As Rob Deeley puts it, this was ‘an early Christmas stuffing’ for his team. The end result though was rather harsh considering that Rudford took Highnam three times to a fifth set and three other ties went to a 4th set, so the final score line doesn’t quite reflect how the games went.

Highnam’s Jason Million and Richard Maddrell were full value for their hat tricks each. Jason lost just the one set against Rob and Richard two sets dropped, one against Lee Bruton and 1 against Mel Garlick.

Chris Pigott, Highnam’s third player did unbelievable well to win all three, as he won all his ties in a deciding set in a different manner each time.

Chris went two sets down against Rob, before coming back to win, was a set adrift vs. Lee with two possible sets left to play before winning both of those, and lastly kept his nerve when playing Mel Garlick after being pegged back twice by Mel, he finished the job off 11-9 in the fifth.

Rudford deserved to win something, but got absolutely nothing.

Rudford ‘A’ 6
Rudford ‘B’ 4

Not much to choose between the two sides in this fixture, but in the end the inability of Rudford ‘B’s third player (who was playing-up mind you from the 2nd division) to score any singles points proved the difference. Otherwise, if Rudford ‘B’ had fielded another player from their divisional squad, they might well have either drawn or even won.

Three straight sets wins for Ann Barnes along with a win each for Ken Smith and Simon Moysey.

Keith Foord & Dave Pearce both defeated Ken and Simon for 2 points apiece, so the doubles would decide the final outcome.

Simon and Ann paired up against Keith & Stewart Jones, and went into a two sets to nil lead. The latter pairing though fought back to level the scores, but alas were pushed out 11-9 in the fifth and were denied a share of the spoils.

Division 2

Highnam ‘B’ 5
Highnam ‘C’ 5

For the first time this season after nearly approaching halve their league matches played, Highnam ‘B’ did not achieve a victory, but do remain unbeaten after this draw. First draw of the season for Highnam ‘C’.

Both teams were missing one of their regular players; for the ‘B’s James Dance who is sitting top of the averages, and for the ‘C’s the Pole, Mariusz Plaskowicki.

Probably one of the ties of the season took place between Dave Gough and Neil Dowding. The tie score was 12-10, 8-11, 14-12, 11-13, 15-13 in favour of Neil, with four of the sets going to a tiebreaker.

Overall there was two wins for Dave and Jo Pigott, which were cancelled out by the same number of wins each for Neil and Tony Wauchope.

David Crabbe beat Elaine Evans for a 5th point for Highnam ‘B’, but Tony and Neil in the doubles conquered Dave & Jo in 4 sets to stop Highnam ‘B’ winning for the 1st time this campaign.

Rudford ‘D’ 6
Redcliffe College 4

The wait goes on for Redcliffe for that elusive first win. The Rudford duo of Stewart Jones (3) and Chris Beard (2) won five singles points between them. Stewart was taken the distance by Richard Johnson & Vidas Rimkus, as was Chris against Richard. It could have possibly been a bigger win, had they not needed to play somebody up from the 3rd division (5th time now already this term).

Andy Taylor won two including defeating Chris in four and there was a win apiece for Vidas and Richard.

Richard was particular unlucky not to win more, as he lost three sets vs. Stewart by two points all in tiebreakers and he was edged out in the 5th set 14-12 in his match-up against Chris that decided that tie.

The doubles was won easily in straight sets by Rudford to seal the deal.

Division 3 - ‘A 100% individual record is broken & a new signing starts with a bang’

Rudford ‘F’ 4
S.T.R. ‘A’ 6

An away win for Tommies ‘A’, with the star of the night being Ian Kellie as a result of 3 four set wins, backed up by two wins by the previously unbeaten Dave Smith.

Congratulations goes to Sten Salisbury, who from two sets to one down, won 11-7 in the fifth against Dave to end his one hundred percent record.

Dave Vye also took Mr. Smith to a 5th set, but this time he won 11-7 in the final set.

Sten added to his triumph over Dave Smith by beating Ken Morritt, with Dave Vye (in 5) and Fabrizio Trifiro both claiming victory over Ken too.

Tommies ‘A’ finished the night off with a four set win in the doubles. Only one tie all evening was completed in the minimum of sets that could be played, which typified how tight the match was.

RSV & Friends ‘C’ 9
Rudford ‘G’ 1

An emphatic win this for RSV, with new signing Mohammed Saleh looking the real deal with three wins, one set dropped in the process and winning a third of his sets 11-0.

He was well backed up by Mike Gray who also won all his games dropping just a couple of sets and two straight sets wins by Jerry Winter.

Luke Woodliffe stopped RSV going away with all the points, by edging out Jerry in five sets in a very close encounter.

Mohammed & doubles substitute Brin Davis claimed the doubles in four sets to reverse the score line of their match away at S.T.R. ‘A’ the previous week.

Grange Baptist 7
Civil Service 3

A good all-round team performance by the hosts, with a maximum from Alistair Wood (no sets dropped) and a brace apiece from Errol Johnson and Len Horwood.

For the away team Paul Daniels only one won, this won’t happen too often this season. Paul lost to Errol in 5 sets, and he beat Len in the same number of sets and he got beaten by Alistair in a tight three set tussle (11-8, 11-9, 12-10).

Phil Lewis won a further point getting the better of Errol 11-9, 11-8, 14-12 and he and Paul combined in the doubles to winning effect against Len & Alistair in 4 sets to finish off the night on a positive note.

Week 12 Result - S.T.R. ‘A’ 9-1 RSV & Friends ‘C’

A walloping this for the visitors, although the margin of defeat was bit harsh, as RSV lost two 5-setters and all 4 ties that went to four sets, including the doubles when Mike Gray & Jerry Winter went down to Ian Kellie and Dave Smith.

Three wins each for Ian & Dave, both being taken to a 5th set in one of their ties (Ian against Jerry where he was two sets behind and Dave versus Brin where he repeated Ian’s trick to probably the frustration of the RSV players).

First two wins for Janie Kirby this season, but Jerry Winter got the better of her to win RSV’s only point and leave Janie reflecting that she let the side down by losing one!

I beg to differ.

Division 4

Highnam ‘D’ 7
St James 3

Highnam bounced back from a heavy defeat last time out, to register an expected win over St James, with Huw Darch, Stewart Blencowe and Derek Pigott all ‘at the double’.

Alan Page was the resistance for the away team with a maximum, losing just the one set to Derek.

The only tie that went beyond 4 sets, was the doubles in which Huw & Derek just held off a fight back from Trevor and Alan to win in 5 and secure a seventh pt on the night.

Week 12 Result - Crypt ‘B’ 7-3 Phoenix ‘B’

Deborah Feltham was a class above the rest, with a hat trick with the solitary set lost in the process. Sam Hobbs won two for Crypt, with Phoenix’s Bob Vallender likewise.

Beth Williams & Mike Burgess for their respective teams claimed a point apiece.

Five of the nine singles were won in four sets, and a sixth tie went to 4 when Sam and Beth had just too much for Bob and Chris Harley in the doubles.

Phoenix’s woes go on and they stay near the foot of the table.

Week 12 Result - S.T.R. ‘C’ 8-2 Highnam ‘D’

What a fabulous result this was for the home side against one of their main rivals for a top two finish and promotion to division three.

Star of the night was Sammy Hau, the only player unbeaten and two wins each from Bohan Du & Chris Green who were involved in some great battles.

All of Bohan’s ties went to a 5th set, with the only one he didn’t win was the 1 he led after three sets (by 2 sets to 1) against Huw Darch.

The other two vs. Stewart Blencowe and Derek Pigott he came from a set down after three sets to win.

Chris also defeated Stewart in five sets, but Huw was the only player from Highnam who was too strong for him, as he lost in straight sets, so Huw was Highnam saviour with two wins.

The doubles was another great contest with Sammy and Bohan just about doing enough against Huw and Stewart, with the score being 11-9, 14-12, 12-10 in the Tommies’ boys favour.

A setback for Highnam it must be said.
