Weekly Reports (2010-2011 Season)

Match Reports - Week Seventeen

Division One

Optimists 8
RSV & Friends ‘A’ 2

Darren Griffin won three without dropping a game and he is still averaging 100%.

RSV’s first defeat of the season, and it just goes to show how strong Optimists can be.

Steve Greening and Mike Kiff played well to win a brace each. Steve beat Suleiman Saleh in a 5 setter.

Abu Saleh after losing his 2nd tie of the campaign to Darren had close 3 sets wins over Mike & Steve.

Debenhams ‘B’ 7
Rudford ‘B’ 3

Rudford ‘B’ remain rooted to the bottom after another defeat here. There was differing hat tricks from Matt Kittle and Chris Ball.

Matt had two comfortable wins, but was pushed the distance by Trevor Oliver for his other win.

Chris on the other hand had to work hard for his points. He lost a set to Dave Pearce, and his other ties went to five. He nipped Trevor to the post 11-9 in the fifth, whilst his tie with Keith Foord was a strange one to say the least.

The first 4 sets were very tight, with Chris winning the 1st 14-12 and the 4th 16-14, but incredibly Chris wiped the floor with Keith in the last set, get this 11-0 !!

Keith gained some comfort by beating Alec Robinson, as did Dave Pearce, but Trevor Oliver could not do so, with Alec winning his only point and his team’s seventh pt.

Rudford ‘A’ 1
Forest Products 9

A very clear cut victory here for the visitors, with Graham Slack and Russell Hayward polishing off the Rudford trio with little fuss, with both dropping just the one set in the process.

Rob Freeman as well managed to win two, both virtue by coming through five setters with Ken Smith & Ann Barnes. Simon Moysey achieved a consolation point by overcoming Rob in 3 sets.

Week 16 Result - Highnam ‘A’ 6-4 Debenhams ‘B’

Thanks to Debenhams ‘B’ for staging this contest 9 days later than scheduled, as Highnam’s hall on the Bank Holiday Monday in early January was unavailable for use.

A mention to Alec Robinson for an outstanding performance as he was the only player to win all three on the night. This despite his team losing overall.

Alec defeated Jason Million and Richard Maddrell in five setters, including storming back from a two set deficit against Jason. He also beat Jo Pigott who was playing-up from the ‘B’ team in Division 2.

Jason and Richard though did beat Debenhams other two players Christine Williams and Phil Hatherall.

Phil claimed a point over Jo in 4, but for the second time in the match, a player came from 2 sets down to register a win. This happened when Jo won the fifth set 11-6 over Christine to win a vital point.

The doubles was an absolute classic with Jason & Richard just holding off Phil & Alec 11-9 in the final set, with the 3rd and 4th sets being won in tiebreaks, both in actual fact by the Debenhams duo, but this counted for little at the end of it.

Division Two

RSV & Friends ‘B’ 8
British Energy ‘B’ 2

Despite a lot of the games being well contested, RSV won the majority of them and therefore this resulted in them being the clear winners.

Three straight sets wins for Ben Roberts, with Nick Walker also winning three dropping the one set to Dave Moore, and two wins for Hamza Bham.

Dave Moore did extremely well to get the better of Hamza in 5 for a singles point for the away team.

They got their second point when the Dave’s, Moore & McIntosh combined in the doubles and triumphed over Ben and Nick in four sets.

Redcliffe College 3
Highnam ‘C’ 7

Richard Johnson & Vidas Rimkus got themselves off their sick beds to play. During Andy Taylor’s second game versus Mariusz Plaskowicki the ‘bionic’ leg gave up! However, due to an unheard amount of edges he managed to record his first ever win over him.

Vidas played well for his two wins. Just think if he had been 100%?

Meanwhile for Highnam ‘C’, Pete Dainty didn’t seem out of place winning 2 matches, despite this being his first time he has played a singles role this term. Good to see Pete back playing in the league.

Tony Wauchope and Mariusz finished the evening off with a straight sets doubles win over the ill stricken Richard & Vidas.

British Energy ‘A’ 6
Rudford ‘E’ 4

A mixture of fortunes for the home trio but this was enough for a win against a team a place above them in the standings.

Charles Campbell with a quality maximum to go along with the fact he dropped just the solitary set this being to Pete Humble. Barney Upton contributed two solid wins and Matthew Sproston chipped in with a further win as a result of a 5 set win over Glyn Lloyd.

Trevor Seymour for the away side claimed a brace due to two 4 set wins and Pete Humble won just the one point, despite Pete having the highest average out of the players on show.

Rudford ‘D’ 1
Debenhams ‘C’ 9

Well, after Rudford ‘D’ resumed their league campaign with a decisive win in their opening outing of 2011, they had an almighty crash landing the following week when Debenhams strolled into town.

Paul Singh with a maximum all in 4 setters, along with Chris White who was taken to a fifth set by both Kim Selfe & Chris Beard.

Barrie Pope added to Rudford’s pain with two wins, but Stewart Jones eased the pain ever so lightly by defeating Barrie in straight sets.

Debenhams finished the night off with a straight sets win in the doubles.

Division Three

S.T.R. ‘A’ 8
Rudford ‘G’ 2

When the big boys come out to play, the smaller boys come away with nothing- Dave Smith and Ian Kellie with maximums.

Janie Kirby added a win, but Luke Woodliffe and Will English were too strong for her, winning a point each as a result.

Tommies ‘A’ completed their dominance when Dave & Ian beat Will and Luke in surprise, surprise a 3 setter doubles.

Rudford ‘F’ 7
S.T.R. ‘B’ 3

Three battling five setters took place in this fixture, with Tommies ‘B’ winning two of them, but despite this the home side was victorious.

Fabrizio Trifiro (3 wins) starred for Rudford after his Christmas break in Italy. Well supported by two wins for Dave Vye including a topsy-turvy 5 setter with Elliott King. He did though come out the wrong side of a 5 setter blowing a 2-0 lead to miss out when taking on Abdu Afifi.

Sten Salisbury added a further win, in 4 over Abdu.

To go along with Abdu’s win, Elliott beat Sten in three and Andy Marshall from 2-1 behind was the winner in his match-up with Sten too.

Grange Baptist 10
Crypt ‘A’ 0

A ruthless display by the home team, as Alistair Wood (lost 1 set), Nigel Emberson (lost 1 set) and Errol Johnson (lost 2 sets) grabbed all the points up for grabs, while Alistair & Errol in the doubles beat the Crypt pair in 4 sets to complete the job.

Civil Service 4
Phoenix ‘A’ 6

Paul Daniels best efforts were not enough (he won all his singles, one given to him & teamed up with Phil Lewis to triumph in straight sets in the doubles), as his side went down to one of the leaders in this tier.

Andy Browett, Angie Brear & Trevor Cox all secured a pair of wins, with Andy having to come through a 5 setter with Martyn Brown.

Angie yet again for the countless time this season won two five-setters versus Phil & Martyn and Trevor also squeezed past Phil in a tie that went the distance.

Trevor was actually denied a chance of a 3rd win, by himself, as due to him hurting his back (an injury that will keep him out of action for a few weeks), he retired after losing the 1st set 11-6 against Paul to hand Civil Service a point.

Division Four

S.T.R. ‘C’ 6
St. James 4

Two player St. James did well to register a narrow loss, mainly thanks to three straight sets wins for Alan Page, although in partnership with Trevor Henry in the doubles they also won that in 3.

Bohan Du defeated Trevor in three with Hector Palmer and Chris Green getting the better of Trevor, but needing another set to do so.

Crypt ‘B’ 4
One Church 6

Only one tie in this match-up went to 5, despite the overall score being rather tight.

One Church won the match thanks to two wins from Mark Wilding and Pablo Williams plus a win from Graham Warman.

In reply, the hosts’ Deborah Feltham gained a maximum losing just the one set to Mark and Olly Tyndall edged out Graham in a tie that went the distance.

Pablo & Mark settled it in a 4 set doubles win against Deborah and Olly.

Crypt ‘D’ 3
Crypt ‘C’ 7

Hat trick hero Matt Emmett was the difference in this Crypt derby with crucially Ben Woodliffe winning two ties in 5 sets, including from being 2-0 down vs. Tim Smith.

Matt Skelding for the Crypt ‘D’ did his best claiming a brace, with Harry Mayo winning one also.

Two of the strugglers in this division met and Seb Taylor won easily against Tim Smith to leave Tim still without a singles win this season.

The doubles was a cracker with Crypt ‘C’ sneaking it in 5.

Phoenix ‘B’ 4
S.T.R. ‘D’ 6

Harkeerit Kalsi was a class above all others, as he strolled to 3 straight sets wins, backed up by two wins from Santos Hau. They also combined in the doubles and won in four to wrap up an away win.

Bob Vallender was the best player on the night for Phoenix ‘B’ with two straight sets wins, Chris Harley achieved a win by edging out Stuart Carver in 5 & Emmanuel Byilingro secured a win by defeating Stuart in four.

Week 16 Result - One Church 10-0 Crypt ‘D’

Another fixture that instead of being played on Bank Holiday Monday in early Jan was rescheduled for a week later, but still at the same venue.

Heavens only knows why Crypt ‘D’ only turned up with one player, pretty pointless to say the least. Mark Wilding, Andy Noakes & Graham Warman all beat Harry Mayo in straight sets to register three points to complete a whitewash, with seven points gifted to them.

A late Xmas present for One Church.

Week 16 Result - St. James 2-8 Crypt ‘B’

A third fixture in the league, that didn’t take place on the 3rd of January, which was rearranged for the following week.

A one-sided match this with Deborah Feltham, Sam Hobbs and Olly Tyndall all winning against two of the St. James players in straight sets, to bag 6 singles points.

Alan Page though turned the tables on Sam & Olly for 2 singles pts for St James, but he was outmuscled by Deborah going down in a well fought 4 set match-up, with the three sets Deborah won all via a tiebreaker, so therefore Deborah had an undefeated evening.

Deborah did gamble by not playing herself in the pairs and she just about got away with it, with Sam & Olly holding off Trevor Henry and Alan 12-10 in the fifth.
