Match Reports - Week Eight

Division 1

Debenhams ‘B’ 4
RSV & Friends ‘A’ 6

RSV’s big guns once again showed how it’s done, with Yacoob Tilly and Abu Salebhai claiming maximums and both lost just a set along the way; resulting in another win to strength their position in 1st place.

To the home side’s credit they never gave in and were rewarded for their efforts, with Chris Ball, Alec Robinson and Christine Williams all winning a singles point. As well as that, the two Chris’ came out as winners in the doubles against Ahmed Bham & Abu in 5 sets, to narrow the gap down to 2 points overall.

Division 2

Redcliffe College 4
Rudford ‘E’ 6

A rather excellent win this for the visitors, as despite having to field a player from the lower division, Redcliffe couldn’t match them. Rich Spry was the hero of the hour with a hat trick supported well by Pete Humble who won 2 games, plus they combined in the doubles & triumphed in straight sets.

Richard Johnson and Andy Taylor both as expected beat Rudford’s other player Will English whom was playing up, as did Vidas Rimkus, but he did better than the other two, by managing to beat Pete in 4 sets to gain a double on the evening.

Rudford ‘D’ 1
Highnam ‘B’ 9

This was as an emphatic result and performance as you are ever likely to see from a side top of the table, and obviously full of confidence, travelling to play against a mid-table team in this tier.

James Dance and Dave Gough showed why they are heading the averages in this division, with three wins each and both dropped just the one set against Stewart Jones. Jo Pigott improved the total with two further wins, losing her opening match of the evening to Rudford’s best player on the night Mr. Jones in 3 close-run sets.

British Energy ‘A’ 8
British Energy ‘B’ 2

In the 1st British Energy derby of the season, the ‘A’ gained the bragging rights & won their second match of the campaign, whilst the ‘B’ side are still looking for their first draw/win.

Matthew Sproston and Charles Campbell both won all their games, although Charles had to win a marathon encounter against Dave Moore in 5, with 3 sets going to a tie-break situation, to be able to do this.

Barney Upton added a couple; Dave McIntosh was the only player for the ‘B’s to win a singles pt, defeating Barney in 4 sets in the first tie of the match.

The ‘B’s also won the last tie, the doubles in 4, but the damage had already been well and truly done.

Division 3

Rudford ‘F’ 5
RSV & Friends ‘C’ 5

A nip and tuck, hard fought match this one, as the contest ended in a draw, which was probably fair over the course of the evening. Only 3 ties were taken in 3 games.

Nobody won all their games but Rudford duo of Fabrizio Trifiro and Phil Dixon won 2 apiece, Phil losing to Jerry Winter (his only win) with all his singles being decided in 4 sets, and Fabrizio was defeated by Brin Davis. Brin also beat Sten Salisbury to claim a double for RSV, Mike Gray got the better of Sten to secure his solitary win and Sten as well went away with a point by deposing of Jerry.

The doubles would sort out whether it ended 5-5 or 6-4 to Rudford, and at 2-1 in sets to Rudford, Rudford only needed to win one of the last two to secure the victory, but RSV fought back winning the 4th and 5th sets to share the spoils.

Grange Baptist 8
S.T.R. ‘B’ 2

A convincing win for Grange, as Alistair Wood & Errol Johnson fought off all that was in front of them clinching maximums each, Errol losing no sets and Alistair just the one.

Len Horwood chipped in with a further point, but could not do better than that, due to Abdu Afifi just edging him out 13-11 in the fifth in their match-up and Ed Watson coming from a set down to win 11-9 in the fourth.

Civil Service 7
Crypt ‘A’ 3

Crypt ‘A’ just like British Energy ‘B’ in division 2, have still yet to taste the smell of success or even achieve a draw this campaign, but gave it their all, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Unfortunately, they ran into Civil’s Paul Daniels who didn’t mess around winning all his games. Kevin Burden improved the total by one as a result of beating Nigel in a deciding set, and Martyn Brown contributed two more points with all his singles going to 5 sets.

Nigel defeated Martyn to win a point, Josh Roberts and Adam Crabbe also claimed a win apiece, but both will have been disappointed not to have won more. Josh was 2 nil up but lost against Martyn, and Adam came from 2 sets behind vs. Martyn to level, only to fall short by the narrowest of margins 11-9 in the final set.

Week 7 Result - Crypt ‘A’ 1-9 Grange Baptist

When you are bottom and struggling to secure points let along wins, luck and good fortune is nearly always going to be against you. Despite the score, Crypt could have won more points, as they lost three 5 setters and lost three 4 setters.

Josh Roberts won their only pt winning in straight sets against John Patterson.

John won 2, winning 1 of his points against Adam Crabbe in 5. Errol Johnson gained a hat-trick, losing just one game and combined with Len Horwood (who as well won all his games, although he only just beat Steve Parsons 11-9 in the fifth to win a maximum), in the doubles coming from 2 nil down to win by 2 pts in the final set.

Division 4 - ‘Highnam Hammer Phoenix’

Phoenix ‘B’ 0
Highnam ‘D’ 10

A rare scenario occurred in this clash, as the home team didn’t even win a set let alone a tie, as the Highnam trio of Huw Darch, Stewart Blencowe and Derek Pigott totally destroyed the opposition and went away with all the points available to them, by winning 30 sets on the bounce.

Week 7 Result - Crypt ‘C’ 8-2 Crypt ‘D’

In the Crypt derby, the ‘C’s were far too strong for the ‘D’ team with Andrew Perks winning another maximum (no sets lost) to keep his 100% record going, Shirley Bailey with a couple & two wins from Ollie Perks.

Matt Skelding was the resistance by beating Shirley and Ollie in a decider both times to make sure of some consolation points for the ‘D’ side.

Week 7 Result - S.T.R. ‘D’ 7-3 Phoenix ‘B’

First win of the season for the juniors from Oakleaze, with a maximum from Gavin Kwok who had a real battle with Bob Vallender winning in 5, with every set being settled by two or three points. Harkeerit Kalsi won 2, losing his 3rd match 11-8 in the fifth to Bob and Stuart Carver added a further win beating Bob surprisingly in straight sets.

Apart from Bob, Paul Brear and Emmanuel B… also won a point each.
