Division 1
Debenhams ‘A’ 7 v Optimists ‘A’ 3
** STOP PRESS ** Darren Griffin has suffered his first defeat in the Gloucester league this season... incredibly, his first defeat since the 2000–01 season! In a tremendous match against old rival William Dawe, the match went to a fifth game where Bill managed to sneak it 11 - 9. Bill remained undefeated on the night, also pairing up with Jason Million, who himself had two wins under his belt, to triumph in the fifth game of the doubles. This all combined with an earlier win from Matt Kittle ensured that reigning champions Debenhams now top the league by two points in their quest to retain their title. For Optimists, a Gordon Shaw victory combined with Darren Griffin’s two wins provided what could be come the end of the season, some crucial points in this ongoing tussle.
While congratulations obviously go to Bill on a fantastic result, congratulations should also go to Darren Griffin for a tremendous achievement, which may well never be equalled.
Debenhams ‘B’ 4 v Rudford ‘A’ 6
Ann Barnes lead the way for Rudford ‘A’, coming through a five game match with Christine Williams to register three individual wins on the night. Paul Smyth provided another two wins for Rudford and with two wins for Debenhams’ Chris Ball and a further win each for Phil Hatherall and Christine Williams, this meant that the overall result hinged on the outcome of the doubles. Ann Barnes and Paul Smyth paired up to win in three straight games and ensured victory on the night belonged to Rudford.
Optimists ‘A’ 8 v Debenhams ‘B’ 2
Three wins for the home teams Darren Griffin and Gordon Shaw combined with a further win for Barry Turner who was making his debut for Optimists ‘A’ this season, was enough to ensure victory belonged to the home team. Debenhams’ Phil Hatherhall came through a tough match with Barry Turner to win 12 – 10 in the fifth and this along with an Alec Robinson win ensured the away team did not go home empty handed.
Optimists ‘B’ 2 v Civil Service ‘A’ 8
Optimists found the going tough against visitor’s Civil Service ‘A’ for whom Yacoob Tilly was in clinical form, winning all three of his matches without the loss of a single game. John Pollard was equally impressive winning three matches for the loss of only two games and a further two wins were provided by Ahmed Bham. Valuable consolation points for Optimists came in the form of a well earned five game win for Steve Greening and a doubles victory for the home team pairing of Alan Churchill and Luke Groves.
Division 2
Debenhams ‘C’ 4 v British Energy ‘A’ 6
Two wins for British Energy’s Brian Cullis were neutralised by two wins from Tony Williamson of the home team and only one point separated the teams as they entered the doubles at the end of the evening. Dave McIntosh and Dave Moore with two wins and one win each respectively, combined for British Energy to win the match against the home team pairing of Barrie Pope and Tom Ricketts, who had both earlier won one match each, securing overall victory for the away team.
British Energy ‘A’ 2 v British Energy ‘B’ 8
Charles Campbell came through a close match with Dave Moore winning 14 – 12 in the fifth to remain undefeated on the night. Two further victories were supplied by Mathew Sproston and Tony Wauchope who later combined to also win the doubles, ensuring a comfortable overall victory for British Energy ‘B’ in this derby match. British Energy’s two consolation points were gained when George Evans Beat Mathew Sproston 11 – 9 in the fifth of a tight game and Dave McIntosh won in four against Tony Wauchope.
Civil Service ‘B’ 4 v Rudford ‘D’ 6
Colin Bruton who is going well in division two this season came through three, five game matches to remain undefeated on the night and inspire a Rudford ‘D’ away victory at Civil Service ‘B’. Two further wins from Stewart Jones gave the away team a one-point lead as they entered the doubles, as Ahmed Bham had also won two matches for the home team and Peter Boruc and Umair Ganny a further one each. Stewart Jones and Chris Beard then paired up to clinch a win in three straight games and with it overall victory.
Rudford ‘C’ 10 v Debenhams ‘C’ 0
The league table suggested that this would be a one sided affair and unfortunately for Debenhams this proved accurate as the home team romped to victory. Three wins each for Chris Pearce, Keith Foord and Trevor Oliver were followed up with a win in the doubles.
Division 3
Redcliffe College 6 v British Energy ‘C’ 4
Two wins each for Redcliffe College’s Richard Johnson, Vidas Rimkus and Andy Taylor had this top of the table clash match wrapped up despite another three victories for the leading performer in division three this season, British Energy’s Neil Dowding. The away team did manage to salvage a further point with a five game win in the doubles, however the night belonged to Redcliffe who now go top of Division three.
Civil Service ‘C’ 6 v Grange Baptist ‘A’ 4
Two wins each for Civil Service’s Mike Gray, Brin Davis and Umair Ganny ensured victory belonged to the home team before the evening entered the doubles where the away team pairing of Errol Johnson and Nigel Emberson, with two wins and one win each respectively, won in four games. Overall, a close fixture in which four of the matches went to a fifth game.
Wotton ‘A’ 3 v Civil Service ‘C’ 7
Umair Ganny claimed a hat trick of wins on the night and this allied with two wins from Brin Davis and a further win from Junaid Surty meant that victory was assured before the doubles match, which they also won. Len Horwood came through a five game match with Brin Davis and albeit a straight set victory, a tough match with Junaid Surty to earn two valuable points for the home team, with a further point coming from Chris East.
Grange Baptist ‘A’ 4 v Rudford ‘F’ 6
Rudford ‘F’ registered their first win of the season after a dramatic doubles game in which the home team clawed back a two game deficit only to narrowly lose 10 – 12 in the fifth. Three wins for the home teams Alistair Wood and one win for Nigel Emberson were negated by two wins apiece for the away teams Elaine Marshall and Phil Dixon. The only point that stood between the teams as they entered the doubles was earned by Rudford’s Dave Vye, following a hard fought victory over Nigel Emberson in which a marathon first game ended 20 – 22.
Division 4
Crypt ‘A’ 5 v Highnam ‘B’ 5
Huw Darch won all three of his matches without the loss of a single game and then proceeded to pair up with Derek Pigott who himself had two wins on the night, to win the doubles in a thrilling match which went all the way, 10 – 12 in the fifth. This ensured that the spoils were shared on the evening, this despite two wins for Crypt’s Luke McFarland and a win each for Nick Chapman and Eddie McFarland.
Highnam ‘B’ 8 v St James Church 2
Impressive form lately from Highnam’s Huw Darch was emphasised with a dazzling victory over St James Church’s consistent performer Alan Page. He then proceeded to complete a hat trick of wins for Highnam, although he was pushed by Trevor Henry who narrowly lost by two points in the fifth game of their encounter. Two further wins apiece for Stewart Blencowe and Derek Pigott ensured a comfortable evening for the home team with the away teams points coming predictably from Alan Page.
Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ 4 v Civil Service ‘D’ 6
Elliot King managed to avenge his only defeat this season with a victory over Hamza Bham, however the night belonged to Civil Service as they in turn managed to avenge their opening week defeat to Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ by reversing the original scoreline in their favour. A win for Kevin Burden and two wins apiece for Phil Lewis and Hamza Bham, who also combined to win the doubles in the fifth game, ensured victory for Civil Service despite three wins for the home team’s Elliot King and one for Abdu Afifi.
Division 5
Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’ 7 v Crypt ‘D’ 3
Bohan Du maintained his good form in division five to claim a hat trick of wins and this combined with a further two wins each from Gavin Kwok and Hector Palmer enabled Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’ to register their first win of the season. Crypt’s David Holman and Ben Holman provided the away team with some valuable points which were later added to when Ben Holman and Tim Smith paired up to win a thrilling doubles match 11 – 8 in the fifth. The scoreline could have been a lot closer as both Holman’s lost five game matches by two points but nonetheless, a well deserved victory for Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’.
Crypt ‘C’ 7 v St Peter’s 3
Another hat trick of wins for Adam Crabbe as he remains undefeated this season. Crypt’s Matt Skelding and St Peters’ Ben Hope both registered two wins apiece on the night and had a tremendous personal tussle in their match, with Ben Hope emerging victorious 11 – 8 in the fifth game. A further home win for Harry Mayo was negated with an away win from Jake Haywood and the night finished with Adam Crabbe and Matt Skelding winning the doubles in three straight games.
