Weekly Reports - Week 17

Division 1

Forest Products ‘A’ 5 v Debenhams ‘B’ 5
Well played Don Sweeney who was in impressive form for Forest Products winning all three of his matches. A further point from Jon Gaskell who won in the fifth against Phil Hatherall, meant that the home team trailed Debenhams by a solitary point as the doubles match approached, due to Christine Williams and Alec Robinson both winning two matches for the away team and Phil Hatherall gleaning a further point. The home team pairing of Jon Gaskell and Don Sweeney then proceeded to combine and win the doubles in three straight games, salvaging a draw for the home team.

Rudford ‘A’ 5 v Civil Service ‘A’ 5
Ann Barnes and John Davis both secured two wins apiece for the home team and Simon Moysey chipped in with a further point, however the away teams Yacoob Tiley was the leading performer during the evening with three wins. He then proceeded to combine with Abu Saleh, who himself had won one match earlier, to clinch victory in the fifth game of a tight doubles match and ensure honours between the teams were even on the night.

Division 2

Rudford ‘D’ 4 v British Energy ‘A’ 6
Colin Bruton didn’t drop a game as he won all three of his matches in this home fixture versus British Energy ‘A’. Stewart Jones was on the wrong side of two five game matches before emerging triumphant in his match with Dave Moore who himself had one win on the night. Two wins apiece for Brian Cullis and George Evans meant that the home team could salvage a draw with victory in the doubles. Unfortunately that was not to be as Dave Moore and George Evans paired up and won in four games to give British Energy ‘A’ overall victory on the night.

British Energy ‘B’ 3 v Highnam ‘A’ 7
Highnam meant business as they won the first six matches on offer. Richard Maddrell with three wins was in clinical form for Highnam and two further wins apiece from Barney Upton and Jo Piggott secured the points as they maintained their challenge for top spot in division two. British Energy’s Mathew Sproston and Tony Wauchope claimed their teams only points with a win each before pairing up in the doubles to win in five games.

Civil Service ‘B’ 7 v Rudford ‘C’ 3
Civil Service crept within touching distance of the promotion places with this impressive defeat of table toppers Rudford ‘C’. Peter Boruc won all three matches for the loss of only one game and was impressively supported by Suleman Salehbnai and Ahmed Bham who both won two matches each. Dave Pearce won two matches for the division two leaders and their only other victory came when he combined with Alan Perratt to win the doubles match 17 – 15 in the fifth, but the night belonged to Civil Service.

Division 3

Civil Service ‘C’ 0 v Redcliffe College ‘A’ 10
Redcliffe College romped to victory in this one sided affair away at Civil Service, ensuring the momentum of their push at the top of division three was maintained. Richard Johnson and Vidas Rimkus were in impressive form winning all of their matches without the loss of a single game, later combining to take the doubles in three straight games.

Division 4

Robinswood Church 3 v Highnam 7
Stewart Blencowe lead the away charge winning all three matches for the loss of only one game and was ably supported by both Huw Darch and Derek Pigott who both chipped in with two victories apiece. Standing resilient for the home team was Mark Wilding who ground out two hard fought wins both in the fifth game. He then proceeded to combine with team mate Jamie Lavender and win the doubles, salvaging what could be crucial points come the end of the season.

Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘A’ 4 v Optimists ‘C’ 6
Optimists travelled to Sir Thomas Rich’s and reversed the earlier season scoreline to avenge their only loss. Once again the fixture was a close affair with five of the matches going the full distance. Ian Kellie won three for the home team and Ken Morritt provided a further point but two wins apiece for Ben Roberts and Nick Walker meant that all that separated the teams as they entered the doubles was a solitary point gained by Optimists’ Matt Inman. The doubles match proved a fitting finale to the evening with the Optimists pairing of Ben Roberts and Matt Inman pulling away from the Sir Thomas Rich’s pairing of Ian Kellie and Ken Morritt in the fifth game to win 11 - 4.

Division 5

Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘C’ 5 v Crypt ‘B’ 5
Sir Thomas Rich’s in form Chris Green emerged from the night undefeated and then combined with Sammy Hau, who himself had earlier won one match, to take a victory in the doubles. This meant that with two wins apiece for Crypt’s Steve Parsons and Ben Tegg and a further point from Josh Roberts, honours were even and the spoils were shared on the evening.
