Weekly Reports - Week 18

Division 1

Debenhams ‘B’ 1 v Debenhams ‘A’ 9
A resounding victory for reigning champions Debenham’s ‘A’ in this derby match with Debenham’s ‘B’. William Dawe and John Tegg both won three matches and then combined to win the doubles, whilst Jason Million came through a close encounter with Christine Williams to win 13 – 11 in the fifth and register two wins during the course of the evening. Phil Hatherall was the only player to salvage a point for the home team as the champions continued impressively in their quest to retain their title this season.

Optimists ‘B’ 0 v Optimists ‘A’ 10
We are entering the business end of the season and Optimists ‘A’ mean business. No compassion shown as they whitewashed their fellow Optimists in this resounding victory. Darren Griffin won three matches for the loss of no games and both Barry Turner and Gordon Shaw registered three further wins apiece. Steve Greening came closest to securing a much needed point for the home team in this derby match, on the wrong end of two five game matches and Luke Groves also lost out 11 – 9 in the fifth of his match with Barry Turner.

Rudford ‘B’ 3 v Rudford ‘A’ 7
Ann Barnes lead the way for Rudford ‘A’ winning all three of her matches without the loss of a single game. Simon Moysey was also in fine form as he claimed a hat trick of wins for the loss of only three games, while team mate Paul Smyth chipped in with a hard fought point, winning 11 – 9 in the fifth of his match with Lee Bruton. For Ruford ‘B’ Mel Garlick won in four against Paul Smyth and Stuart Greene won 13 – 11 in the fifth of his match, also with Paul Smyth. The home team pairing of Lee Bruton and Stuart Greene then paired up to win 11 – 7 in the fifth, adding some substance to the final scoreline.

Division 2

Highnam ‘A’ 3 v Civil Service ‘B’ 7
A valuable away win for Civil Service ‘B’ which keeps them within touching distance of the top two spots in Division two. Two wins apiece for Suleman Salehbnai, Ahmed Bham and Paul Singh were enough to ensure victory despite Highnam’s James Dance who came through three five game matches to emerge victorious in two. A further point from Highnam’s Dave Gough was not enough to trouble Civil service who also won the doubles in three straight games.

Rudford ‘C’ 8 v Rudford ‘D’ 2
In this derby the ‘home’ team came out on top with three wins coming from this season’s leading performer in division two Chris Pearce, who overcame stiff resistance in his match with Stewart Jones who eventually succumbed 11 – 5 in the fifth. Keith Foord was also in fine form winning three matches while Alan Perratt chipped in with a further point. The ‘away’ team’s points came from Kim Selfe and Stewart Jones, who won 11 – 4 in the fifth of his match with Alan Perratt. The home team pairing of Chris Pearce and Keith Foord managed to clinch the doubles in the fifth 11- 5 and with it an emphatic home victory for Rudford ‘C’ on the night that maintains their promotion challenge.

Division 3

Rudford ‘E’ 8 v Rudford ‘F’ 2
Pete Humble lead the way with three convincing wins and team mates Rich Spry and Glyn Lloyd both followed with two more wins apiece as Rudford ‘E’ emerged triumphant in this derby match which sees them stay within reach of the top two places in the division. While Sten Salisbury and Dave Vye registered the ‘away’ teams only points of the fixture they can take some consolation in the fact that the match was much closer than the final score suggest. Four of the matches went the full distance and as the home captain Pete Humble said, “The final result did not reflect the standard of play from the Rudford ‘F’ players as the games were extremely close. New recruit Fabrizio Trifiro was not outgunned and will certainly be winning very soon”.

Wotton ‘A’ 4 v British Energy ‘C’ 6
Chris East lead the resistance for the home team with three wins and Len Horwood chipped in with a point gained from a five game tussle with Trevor Cox who himself had earlier emerged victorious in another five game tussle with Norman Saunders. Two victories apiece from Neil Dowding and Mariusz Plaskowicki meant that British Energy lead by one point as the final doubles fixture dawned. British Energy’s Neil Dowding and Mariusz Plaskowicki proceeded to combine and win convincingly in three straight games, thus taking the match overall.

Redcliffe College 6 v Grange Baptist 4
The away team’s Alistair Wood came through a close match with Redcliffe’s Richard Johnson, winning 11 – 6 in the fifth to remain undefeated on the night. This also included the doubles match where he combined with Errol Johnson to again win 11 – 6 in the fifth of another hard fought match. Ultimately this was in vain though as the Redcliffe team all registered two wins apiece, Vidas Rimkus coming through a five game match with Errol Johnson, to secure overall victory.

Division 4

Optimists ‘C’ 9 v Crypt ‘A’ 1
Optimists maintained their momentum at the top of division four with a convincing victory over Crypt ‘A’. Ben Roberts and Matt Inman both won all three of their matches while Nick Walker registered a further two after a close affair with Michael McFarlane, pinching the fifth 11 – 6. Crypt Luke McFarland executed an impressive comeback in his game with Nick Walker, 2 – 0 down he won the next three close games to score the away teams only point on the night as Optimists also claimed the doubles match.

Crypt ‘A’ 1 v Civil Service ‘D’ 9
Crypt’s Michael McFarlane managed to win in four games against Civil Service’s Kevin Burden but this was to be the home team’s only success on the night. Dominant play from Civil Service as Hamza Bham clinically won all three of his matches, a feat equalled by team mate Phil Lewis, though he had to come through two hard fought five game matches with Luke and Eddie Mcfarland. Kevin Burden registered a further two wins for the away team and their dominance was emphasised as Civil Service also took the doubles in three straight games.

Civil Service ‘D’ 8 v St James Church 2
Hamza Bham was again in dominant form for Civil Service winning all three of his matches, including a victory over one of Division fours leading performers Alan Page. Phil Lewis and Martyn Brown provided ample support with two wins apiece. Alan Page secured St James Church’s only points of the fixture as Civil Service won their second match of the week in convincing fashion to maintain their surge towards the top of division four.

Highnam ‘B’ 5 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘A’ 5
The home team pairing of Derek Pigott and Stewart Blencowe both with two wins apiece on the night, combined in the doubles to win in four games and salvage a draw in this hard fought match. Sir Thomas Rich’s Ian Kellie was once again in dominant form, winning all three of his matches without dropping a game and was ably supported with a win each from Tony Saxton and Janie Kirby who again had a full nights play. All three of her matches once again went the full distance and following a terrific comeback from 10 – 6 down to win 12 – 10 in the fifth of her match against Claire Bell she then went down to Derek Pigott 12 – 10 in the fifth despite being 6 – 1 up.

Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ 7 v Robinswood Church 3
Abdu Afifi was the leading performer for the home team winning all three of his matches. Elliott King provided a further two and Will Lee chipped in with one more as Sir Thomas Rich’s moved the match away from visitors Robinswood Church. A notable victory for the away teams Andy Noakes as he defeated Elliott King 11 – 8 in a tight match and then went on to register a further win. Pablo Williams secured another valuable point for the away team though the pairing of Elliott King and Abdu Afifi proved too strong in the doubles.

Division 5

Crypt ‘B’ 5 v Crypt ‘C’ 5
Adam Crabbe of Crypt ‘C’ came through a tight match with home team captain Josh Roberts winning 11 – 5 in the fifth to remain undefeated on the night. Josh Roberts went on to register two wins for the home team as did team mate Nigel Cullis. This meant that with a point each gleaned by Harry Mayo and Matt Skelding, who won 11 – 6 in the fifth against Ian Ewart, the match hinged on the outcome of the doubles. The home team pairing of Josh Roberts and Ian Ewart won in four games and with it secured a draw for the home side in this derby match.

Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’ 0 v Rudford ‘G’ 10
When you have the division five leaders visiting it does not bode well to have a player missing. In a match that would have been difficult enough the night turned in to a nightmare as the league leaders took all that was on offer. With the exception of Bohan Du’s match with Paul Russom where he lost in the fifth the fixture proved a comfortable nights work for Rudford’s Phil Wallace, Will English and Paul Russom.
