Weekly Reports - Week 19

Division 1

Debenhams ‘A’ 10 v Forest Products ‘A’ 0
When travelling away to play the reigning champions a victory is unlikely. When you have a player absent it becomes improbable. When another withdraws after a solitary game it becomes a ‘Mission Impossible’. Rob Freeman put up valiant resistance losing two matches in the fifth to both William Dawe 11 – 7 and John Tegg 11 – 8. Jason Million won his match in straight games and this emphatic score line ensures the tussle at the top of division one remains close.

Debenhams ‘B’ 2 v Optimists ‘A’ 8
Optimists’ Darren Griffin registered three wins for the loss of no games. Gordon Shaw also registered three wins though he had to navigate a difficult match with Christine Ball, eventually winning in the fifth. Barry Turner added a further win for Optimists but was on the wrong side of two closely fought matches, losing 11 – 9 to Christine Ball and 11 – 6 to Phil Hatherall, both in the fifth. Griffin and Shaw also teamed up to win the doubles and are hot on the heels of the reigning champions.

Rudford ‘B’ 3 v Civil Service ‘A’ 7
Civil Service proved too strong for Rudford with dominant performances from John Pollard and Yacoob Tily who both recorded three wins during the course of the evening. Paul Daniels provided a further win though the script did not quite run to plan as Lee Bruton and Stuart Greene combined in the doubles for the home team and defeated Pollard and Tily in four games. Rob Deeley and Lee Bruton also supplied a point apiece for the home team from the earlier singles matches.

Optimists ‘B’ 1 v Rudford ‘A’ 9
Optimists have yet to register a win this season and are starting to get detached at the bottom of division one as Rudford ‘A’ inflicted another heavy defeat upon them. Their only point gleaned from this fixture was an impressive 11 – 4 win for Luke Groves in the fifth of his match against Simon Moysey and Steve Greening once again came close for Optimists losing 12 – 10 and 11 – 8 in the fifth of his matches with Simon Moysey and Paul Smyth respectively. Ann Barnes and Paul Smyth both recorded three wins apiece for a dominant Rudford side and this combined with two wins for Simon Moysey was enough to ensure a very comfortable night was had for the visitors.

Civil Service ‘A’ 6 v Forest Products ‘A’ 4
Leading performer on the evening was Forest Products’ Russell Hayward who overcame Yacoob Tily 14 – 12 in the fifth game of their tussle, however this did not prove enough as they only managed to register one further point thanks to a Jon Gaskell victory over Peter Boruc. Two wins apiece for Civil Service’s Abu Salehbnai and Yacoob Tily combined with a win for Peter Boruc meant that the overall outcome of the match hinged on the doubles. The home team pairing of Peter Boruc and Yacoob Tily then won in four against the away team pairing of Russell Hayward and Ernie Pemberton.

Division 2

Highnam ‘A’ 8 v Rudford ‘D’ 2
One of the leading performers in division two this season is Highnam’s Richard Maddrell who once again won all three of his matches for the loss of only one game. James Dance and Barnaby Upton provided a further two wins apiece and Highnam also claimed the doubles to ensure a comfortable looking score line. Rudford’s points were gleaned by Kim Selfe following a victory over James Dance and Stuart Jones, who after losing 12 – 10 in the fifth to James Dance, claimed a victory over Barnaby Upton.

Civil Service ‘B’ 9 v British Energy ‘B’ 1
Suleman Salehbnai and Paul Singh were both in dominant form for the home team winning three matches apiece and were ably supported by team mate Ahmed Bham who had a busy evening winning two of the three extremely close, hard fought five set matches in which he was involved. The loss came against Tony Wauchope who clinched the visitor’s only point winning 11 – 8 in the fifth. The one sided score line was further emphasised when the home team won the doubles though this was another close affair, 13 – 11 again in the fifth.

British Energy ‘A’ 1 v Debenhams ‘C’ 9
George Evans won 11 – 6 in the fifth of his match with Barrie Pope and despite pushing Tony Williamson to a fifth game, as did team mate Dave Moore, British Energy ‘A’ could have really done with some more points as they are becoming slightly detached at the bottom of division two. Debenhams’ Chris White and Tony Williamson both registered three wins apiece and later combined to win the doubles and with two further wins coming from Barrie Pope, ensured a convincing win for the away team.

Division 3

Rudford ‘E’ 4 v British Energy ‘C’ 6
This clash between two of the principal title hopefuls in division three proved a successful evening for Mariusz Plaskowicki who won all three of his matches and then combined with Neil Dowding, who himself had won two matches earlier, to take the doubles 11 – 9 in the fifth of what was a very close match. This doubles win confirmed the victory for British Energy despite two wins for Trevor Seymour of Rudford for whom there was a further win apiece supplied by Rich Spry and Glyn Lloyd.

Redcliffe College 8 v Rudford ‘F’ 2
Two teams in dire need of points albeit for completely different reasons met in this fixture and it was Redcliffe College who triumphed with a comfortable victory at home against Rudford ‘F’. Three wins apiece for Richard Johnson and Andy Taylor, aligned with two more from Vidas Rimkus were more than enough despite a victory for Rudford’s Elaine Marshall who won in four against Vidas Rimkus and another win in the doubles via Dave Vye and Sten Salisbury.

Grange Baptist ‘A’ 8 v Civil Service ‘C’ 2
Grange Baptist’s Alistair Wood and Errol Johnson both overcame a valiant Mike Gray of Civil Service in the fifth game of their matches to remain undefeated on the night and this aligned with a victory for team mate Nigel Emberson ensured a comfortable victory ensued. A surprising off night for Civil service’s Umair Ganny who lost twice meant that a victory apiece for Mike Gray and Umair Ganny over Nigel Emberson was the away team’s only success on the evening.

Rudford ‘E’ 8 v Wotton ‘A’ 2
Man of the match was Glyn Lloyd who played his usual gutsy game coming back from two games down in his match with Chris East to win 11 – 7 in the fifth and register three win on the night. Pete Humble and Rich Spry both chipped in with two wins apiece and later paired up to twin the doubles match 12 – 10 in the fourth. Chris East picked up two valuable points for Wotton in what looks like being a very tight affair at the bottom of the table as the season end nears. Whilst Wotton may have lost the match, Lenny and Norman easily won the ‘Quip’ match by 10 funnies to 0.

Division 4

Optimists ‘C’ 9 v St James Church 1
Optimists were in dominant form as St James Church’s consistent performer Alan Page suffered a rare night losing twice, though in his defence he was bunged up with the ‘Flu’. That said he still proved too strong for Matt Inman winning in four games and the two matches with Nick Walker and Ben Roberts were both tremendous spectacles for those watching. Both Ben Roberts and Nick Walker ended the evening undefeated and Walker and Inman then combined to win the doubles in three games ensuring an emphatic score line in Optimists favour on the night.

Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘A’ 9 v Robinswood Church 1
Robinswood’s Mark Wilding defeated Sir Thomas Rich’s Tony Saxton in four games though this proved to be the only high point for the visitor’s as Sir Thomas Rich’s demonstrated the form that has them battling away at the top of Division four this season. Ian Kellie again registered three wins, as did Janie Kirby who also managed the rare feat of avoiding any five setters during the course of the evening.

Civil Service ‘D’ 6 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ 4
Two of Division four’s form players met with Elliot King winning 11 – 8 in the fifth of his close match with Hamza Bham of Civil Service. Elliot registered three wins on the night and Ed Watson who narrowly lost 11 – 8 in the fifth to Hamza, added a further point. However, with Hamza Bham and Phil Lewis both winning two matches apiece and Martyn Brown chipping in with another point the outcome hinged on the doubles. Civil Service comfortably won in three straight games and with it claimed overall victory on the night to keep their push for the top spot in division four heading in the right direction.

Highnam ‘B’ 9 v Crypt ‘A’ 1
Highnam faced opponents Crypt ‘A’ who were missing a player on the night and proceeded to take almost all that was on offer. The only consolation point for Crypt came when Eddie McFarland defeated Huw Darch 11 – 6 in the fifth of their match. Eddie also pushed Stewart Blencowe to a fifth game and then paired up with Luke McFarland to again put up stern but ultimately futile resistance as they lost 11 – 5 in the fifth. Two wins apiece for Highnam’s Stewart Blencowe and Derek Pigott along with a further win from Huw Darch ensured a comfortable score line for the home team.

St James Church 3 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ 7
Sir Thomas Rich’s Elliot King managed to record the rare feat of winning three straight games for the loss of zero points but only emerged from the fixture with two wins as St James’ Alan Page returned to form registering his usual three wins for St James. Two further wins for the away teams Ed Watson and Abdu Affifi meant that the result was never in doubt though the doubles was still a hard fought affair with the away team pairing of Elliot King and Ed Watson triumphing 12 – 10 in the fifth against the home team pairing of Trevor Henry and Alan Page.

Division 5

Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘C’ 6 v Rudford ‘G’ 4
Two of the form players in division five met in this fixture with Chris Green winning 11 – 3 in the fifth of his match with visitor Pete Rimmer. Chris Green remained undefeated on the night and top’s the player averages this season in division five as Sir Thomas Rich’s remain within touching distance of the promotion places. Liam Foylan and Sammy Hau supplied a further win apiece but the match hinged on the doubles as Paul Russom won two matches for Rudford and Pete Rimmer and Phil Wallace both chipped in with a further point apiece. The home team then secured overall victory with a straight set win in the doubles.

Crypt ‘D’ 6 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’ 4
This battle between two teams near the foot of division five proved a close affair that could have been even closer had the away team managed to field three players on the night. This proved costly for Sir Thomas Rich’s as despite winning four of the seven matches played, with two wins apiece for Bohan Du and Sufyan Ghanti, overall victory went to the Crypt team with a win each for Simon Parkinson and Ben Holman who then also combined to win the doubles.

St Peter’s 1 v Crypt ‘C’ 9
St Peters cause was not helped with a player missing on the night though visitor’s Crypt ‘C’ were in dominant form as Matt Skelding won both of his matches without the loss of a single game as was Rhys Hayward who also won all three for the loss of only one game. Skelding and Hayward proceeded to pair up and also win the doubles on a night were the home teams only success came when Sam Hobbs defeated Harry Mayo in four games.
