Weekly Reports - Week 20
Division 1
Optimists ‘A’ 6 v Debenhams ‘A’ 4
This eagerly awaited clash between the former champions and the reigning champions did not disappoint. The main course on the menu was the mouth watering third and deciding clash of the season between Optimists’ Darren Griffin and Debenhams’ William Dawe. On the night both players had already registered two wins apiece all in straight sets when they met and the match was a close affair with Darren Griffin winning 8, 10 and 7. Optimists’ Barry Turner won 11 – 9 in the fifth of his match with Matt Kittle but then lost 14 – 12 in the fifth to Jason Million. A point apiece for Optimists’ Gordon Shaw and Debenhams’ Matt Kittle negated each other and the outcome of this fixture hinged on the doubles. A tremendous and fitting finale ensued with Debenhams clawing back a two game deficit to level the match only for Optimists to emerge victorious 12 – 10 in the fifth and with it claim overall victory.
Rudford ‘A’ 6 v Debenhams ‘B’ 4
Rudford’s Ann Barnes came through 12 – 10 in the fifth of her match with Debenhams’ Alec Robinson to record three wins during the course of the evening. Simon Moysey almost followed suit for the home team but was denied 11 – 8 in the fifth by Alec Robinson who after being involved in three five game matches registered two wins for the away team. Christine Williams and Phil Hatherall both provided a win apiece for Debenhams and this meant that the overall result hinged on the outcome of the doubles match. Ann Barnes and Simon Moysey proceeded to pair up and defeated Christine Williams and Phil Hatherall in three straight but close games.
Forest Products ‘A’ 6 v Rudford ‘B’ 4
Rob Freeman and Don Sweeney both won two matches apiece for the home team, Rob freeman coming through 11 – 7 in the fifth game of his match with Mel Garlick, who had earlier beaten Don Sweeney 11 – 8 in the fifth game of their match. A home win for Jon Gaskell was negated by a win for Lee Bruton of the away team though two wins for Rudford’s Rob Deeley did ensure that only a solitary point separated the teams as the doubles approached. Rob Freeman and Don Sweeney paired up to win in three straight games and with it clinched the match and the vital points which sees them edging away from the bottom two places in division one.
Division 2
Debenhams ‘C’ 1 v Rudford ‘C’ 9
Table toppers Rudford were in uncompromising mood as Chris Pearce and Alan Perratt won all of the matches they were offered on the night including the doubles. Keith Foord won a further two matches, his only loss coming against Barrie Pope who registered the home teams only success of the fixture.
Rudford ‘D’ 3 v Civil Service ‘B’ 7
Ahmed Bham was the star turn for Civil Service ‘B’ coming through 11 – 9 in the fifth of his game with Stewart Jones to register three wins on the night. Two away wins were also provided by Peter Boruc who was denied a hat-trick by Rudford’s Colin Bruton who won 13 – 11 in the fifth of their match and then also went on to triumph over Suleman Salehbnai in another five game match. Suleman Salehbnai was involved in one more five game match, losing 13 – 11 to Stewart Jones, before winning in straight games in his match with Geoff Perratt and then teaming up with Ahmed Bham to win the doubles.
Division 3
British Energy ‘C’ 8 v Redcliffe College 2
Two teams challenging for top spot in division three met and Redcliffe were left in no doubt as to whom the favourites are as British Energy dominated proceedings on the night. Neil Dowding and Mariusz Plaskowicki both currently the top two ranked players in division three, dropped only one game each as they clinically won all of their matches and then paired up to win the doubles. A further win for Trevor Cox confirmed the home team’s dominance despite a win apiece for Redcliffe College’s Richard Johnson and Vidas Rimkus.
Rudford ‘F’ 5 v Grange Baptist ‘A’ 5
Dave Vye was the star performer for Rudford as he rattled off three victories for the loss of only one game. Further wins from Sten Salisbury and Fabrizio Trifiro, off the mark in his second fixture, meant that the match all hinged on the doubles as Alistair Wood and Errol Johnson both won two matches each for the away team. The away team pairing of Alistair Wood and Errol Johnson proved too strong for the home team partnership of Sten Salisbury and Dave Vye, taking the match in three straight games and ensuring honours were even on the night.
Civil Service ‘C’ 6 v Wotton ‘A’ 4
Umair Ganny lead the way for Civil Service winning all three of his matches for the loss of only one game and was ably supported by team mates Mike Gray and Junaid Surty who both chipped in with a win apiece. Two wins each for Len Horwood and Chris East of Wotton meant that they could salvage a draw with a win in the doubles. Civil Service called in Brin Davis to partner Umair Ganny for this specific match and this proved to be a master stroke as they clinched victory 11 – 6 in the fifth and with it overall victory.
Division 4
Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ 4 v Optimists ‘C’ 6
Elliot King won 12 – 10 in the fifth of his match with Optimists’ Ben Roberts and went on to register three wins during the course of the evening. Sir Thomas Rich’s Ed Watson provided a further point, however with two wins apiece for Nick Walker and Matt Inman and a further point from Ben Roberts, Optimists were a point ahead going in to the doubles. Ben Roberts and Matt Inman then won the last two games of the doubles match to triumph 11 – 6 in the fifth and with it claimed a narrow victory for Optimists.
Robinswood Church 2 v Civil Service ‘D’ 8
The home team could only field two players in this clash though Robinswood’s Mark Wilding still managed to prove a thorn in the side of Civil Service as he won two matches and then lost a close match 13 – 11 in the fifth to Phil Lewis who remained undefeated on the night. Further win’s for Hamza Bham and Kevin Burden who also combined to win the doubles ensured that Civil Service’s push at the top of division four continues at a pace.
Crypt ‘A’ 2 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘A’ 8
Luke McFarland was in fine form for the home team as he defeated the leading performer in division four Ian Kellie in three straight games and then went on to triumph 11 – 8 in the fifth over Ken Morritt before finally succumbing 11 – 9 in the fifth to Tony Saxton. Tony Saxton remained undefeated on the night and later combined with Ken Morritt, who registered two wins himself, to claim a victory in the doubles. Two wins for Ian Kellie ensured a comfortable away victory appeared on the scorecard.
St James Church 5 v Highnam ‘B’ 5
St James Church came close to securing their first win of the season but were denied by Highnam thanks mainly to the efforts of Huw Darch who won all three of his matches. His victories included an 11 – 8 win in the fifth of his match with Alan Page after coming back from two games down and there was also a win apiece for Stewart Blencowe and Claire Bell. Two wins apiece for the home teams Alan Page and Moses Adelowo, who also came back from two games down in his match with Claire Bell to win 11 – 7 in the fifth, meant that Highnam lead by a solitary point as the doubles match loomed. Alan Page and Moses Adelowo proceeded to pair up and win in three straight games and salvage a draw for the home team.
Division 5
Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’ 0 v Crypt ‘B’ 10
In the eighth match of the night Sir Thomas Rich’s Bohan Du lost 11 – 7 in the fifth game of his match with Crypt’s Steve Parsons and this was unfortunately as close as the home team came to securing a point. Crypt ‘B’ kept their title challenge on course with a ruthless demolition of their opponents as Josh Roberts, Nigel Cullis and Steve Parsons took everything that was on offer.
Rudford ‘G’ 8 v Crypt ‘D’ 2
Crypt’s David Holman upset the formbook with a four game victory over Paul Russom and then paired up with Ben Holman to claim another point in the doubles match but this was all they could take away from table topping Rudford ‘G’. Rudford had a comfortable night against the visiting Crypt team who unfortunately had a player missing and dominant performances from Luke Woodcliffe and Will English and a further win from Paul Russom ensured the score line reflected this.
Crypt ‘C’ 2 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘C’ 8
Two teams desperate for a win that would keep them in touch with the promotion places in division five met and two of the form players came up against each other. Sir Thomas Rich’s Chris Green came out on top in his battle with Adam Crabbe but although the win was in three straight games each game was by a narrow two point margin. Chris Green went on to remain undefeated and both Sammy Hau and Liam Foylan chipped in with two further wins apiece along with the doubles to emphasise their dominance on the score line. Adam Crabbe secured the home teams only points of the evening.
