Weekly Reports - Week 4
Division 1
Civil Service ‘A’ 5 v Debenhams ‘A’ 5
Jason Million and Matt Kittle won the doubles which avoided a rare defeat for the defending champions. Yacoob Tiley and Abu Saleh both contributed with two wins for the home team whilst William Dawe was once again in masterful form for Debenhams, winning all three of his matches without the loss of a single game.
Rudford ‘A’ 1 v Optimists ‘A’ 9
Optimists were once again in crushing form as they overcame Rudford in this division one match. Ann Barnes provided the only victory for the home team on the night though Paul Smyth did push both Mike Kiff and Duncan Toon to a fifth game. Darren Griffin and Mike Kiff both recorded three wins each for the away team and then teamed up for a familiar victory in the doubles.
Optimists ‘B’ 5 v Forest Products ‘A’ 5
Russell Hayward was in fine form for the away team winning all three of his matches and was ably supported with two further wins from team-mate Jon Gaskell. Ultimately, this was not quite enough to secure a victory as Steven Greening and Luke Groves won the doubles in four games to snatch a draw for the home team.
Rudford ‘B’ 2 v Debenhams ‘B’ 8
Once again Chris Ball won all three of his matches for the away team and then teamed up with Alec Robinson, who himself had two wins on the night as did team mate Phil Hatherall, to win the doubles. The home teams Lee Bruton and Mel Garlick shared a couple of wins to pick up some valuable points in a match where the away team was dominant.
Division 2
Rudford ‘C’ 10 v British Energy ‘B’ 0
Utter domination of proceedings was the order of the night as the home team won all of the matches on offer. Chris Pearce and Dave Pearce were in impressive form as was Keith Foord, although he had to fight hard for a five game win against Matthew Sproston and even harder against Charles Campbell winning 18 – 16 in the fifth.
British Energy ‘A’ 4 v Highnam ‘A’ 6
Two wins apiece from the home teams Brian Cullis and Dave McIntosh cancelled out two wins apiece from Highnams Dave Gough and Jo Pigott. This meant that Barnaby Upton’s win for the away team was the only difference between the teams as they entered the final doubles match of the evening. Unfortunately for British Energy, Dave Gough and Jo Pigott proved formidable opposition as they won in three straight games.
Debenhams ‘C’ 4 v Civil Service ‘B’ 6
Frustrating night for the home team who despite winning one more match on the night actually lost the contest as they had a player missing. Chris White won all three of his matches and then teamed up with Barrie Pope to win the doubles but one win apiece for the away teams Peter Boruc, Ahmed Bham and Paul Singh proved enough.
British Energy ‘B’ 4 v Rudford ‘D’ 6
Fittingly the final singles match of the evening was between Matthew Sproston of British Energy and Stewart Jones of Rudford who were both undefeated at that point with two wins each. A five game match followed with Jones pulling away for victory in the fifth game. Two earlier victories for Colin Bruton were negated by one win apiece for the home teams Charles Campbell and Tony Wanchope. This meant that the overall result all hinged on the doubles match where Rudford emerged triumphant.
Division 3
Grange Baptist 4 v Civil Service ‘C’ 6
Once again the nights leading performer was Umair Ganny who won all three of his singles matches and then paired up with Zunaid Surty to win the doubles. One victory apiece from team-mates Mike Gray and Brinley Davis ensured an away victory despite two wins for Alistair Wood and one win apiece for Nigel Emberson and Errol Johnson of the home team.
British Energy ‘C’ 8 v Rudford ‘F’ 2
Numbers don’t always tell the full story and on a night where the score line appeared emphatic, it was a close affair with six of the ten matches going the full distance. Neil Dowding was the star performer for the home team winning all three matches and Dave Eaton playing in ‘borrowed’ trainers won another two, as did Alan Lardner. Phil Dixon won two hard fought matches for the away team.
Wotton ‘A’ 4 v Redcliffe College 6
An away victory for Redcliffe College for whom Andy Taylor shone with three wins on the night. Richard Johnson followed this up with two victories and Vidas Rimkus with one. Chris East provided two wins for the home team and then teamed up with Len Horwood, who had won one match, to take the doubles match convincingly but ultimately in vain as the match was by then already lost.
Rudford ‘E’ 7 v Civil Service ‘C’ 3
Another 7-3 win for Rudford E with some very close games. Pete Humble recovering from injury won all three games on the night backed up with two wins each from Glyn Lloyd and Trevor Seymour. The doubles was a close fought contest with Umair Ganny and Brinley Davis of Civil Service shading it 13 – 11 in the fifth.
Division 4
Optimists ‘C’ 10 v Robinswood Church ‘A’ 0
Nick Walker, Ben Roberts and George Evans were all in fine form for the home team as they dominated proceedings on the night. Pablo Williams of Robinswood managed to push George Evans, losing in the fifth game after being 2 – 1 up. Roberts and Evans then paired up for victory in the doubles to complete an emphatic win for Optimists.
Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘B’ 5 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘A’ 5
Ian Kellie suffered his first defeat in division four against Elliot King who is in a vein of fine form that continued as he won all three of his matches. Janie Kirby proved that stamina is not an issue, taking all of her matches the full distance and emerging victorious from two of them. Ed Watson and Abdu Afifi shared a win each for the teams and honours were even in this derby match when the home team won the doubles at the end of the evening.
Civil Service ‘D’ 7 v Highnam ‘B’ 3
Hamza Bham continued this season’s impressive form with three wins for the home team and this coupled with two wins from Phil Lewis and one from Martyn Brown ensured a victory. Stewart Blencowe and Derek Pigott with two wins and one win respectively earned some valuable points for the away team.
St James Church 4 v Crypt ‘A’ 6
Consistent performer Alan Page of St James Church again won all three of his matches and then paired up with Trevor Henry for a victory in the doubles. This however was not enough as two wins each for the away teams Luke McFarland, Eddie McFarland and Nick Chapman secured victory for Crypt ‘A’.
Robinswood Church ‘A’ 3 v Civil Service ‘D’ 7
Robinswood Church gained their first points of the campaign with two wins from Pablo Williams and one from Andy Noakes, however honours on the evening went to the away team. The award for leading performer went to Phil “underarm” Lewis who won all three of his matches, including a close fought affair with Mark Wilding in the fifth game by two points. Martyn Brown supported with two wins and there was a further win from Kevin Burden.
Division 5
Crypt ‘B’ 5 v Rudford ‘G’ 5
Even Pete Rimmer’s fine form was not enough to seal victory for the away team as Steve Parsons and Ben Tegg, both with two wins apiece, teamed up in the doubles and won the match to avoid defeat on the night. Paul Russom and Phil Wallace both chipped in with a win each for Rudford.
Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘D’ 5 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘C’ 5
Honours were shared in this derby fixture which had a fitting climax when the away team clinched the doubles in the fifth game of the match to snatch a draw. Bohan Du won all three of his matches while there was two wins apiece for Sammy Hau and Chris Green of the away team and one each for Hector Palmer and Gavin Kwok of the home team.
Crypt ‘D’ 8 v St Peters 2
Three wins for Sam Woodcock and two each from Ben Holman and Alan Munday ensured a home victory for the crypt team. Despite two wins from Sam Hobbs and a close two-point defeat in the fifth game of the doubles, the result was never in question on a night where the home team dominated.
