Weekly Reports - Week 7
Division 1
Rudford ‘B’ 2 v Optimists ‘A’ 8
Optimists’ Mike Kiff came through a five game match with Rudford’s Stuart Greene to win all three of his matches and then proceeded to pair up with Gordon Shaw, who also won all three of his matches, to triumph in the doubles. This combined with an earlier victory from Steve Greening meant that an emphatic away victory was assured for Optimists despite a win each for the home teams Lee Bruton and Stuart Greene.
Optimists ‘B’ 0 v Debenhams ‘A’ 10
Reigning champions Debenhams ‘A’ proved impenetrable opposition for Optimists as William Dawe, Matt Kittle and Jason Million each put in convincing performances to win all of their matches. Optimists’ Alan Churchill took Matt Kittle to a fifth game but this was as close as the home team came to claiming a point as Debenhams also won the doubles in four games.
Debenhams ‘B’ 4 v Forest Products 6
One win each from Phil Hatherall and Christine Williams combined with two wins from Alec Robinson meant that Debenhams were one point behind Forest Products, for whom Jon Gaskell and Rob Freeman won two matches each and Don Sweeney won one, going in to the doubles. Gaskell and Freeman won in four games against Williams and Robinson and secured an away win for Forest Products on the night.
Civil Service ‘A’ 6 v Rudford ‘A’ 4
Leading performance came from Abu Seleh who came through two five game matches to remain undefeated on the night and this allied with two wins from Yacoob Tily and one from John Pollard, was enough to assure home ascendancy in this fixture. While Rudford’s John Davis won two matches and then united with Simon Moysey to win the doubles, this combined with an earlier point from Paul Smythe was not enough as victory went to Civil Service ‘A’.
Division 2
Rudford ‘C’ 7 v Civil Service ‘B’ 3
Three wins from Chris Pearce and two wins apiece from Alan Perratt and Trevor Oliver were enough to ensure a victory on the night for Rudford against opponents Civil Service ‘B’. Consolation for Civil Service as Peter Boruc who had ended up on the wrong side of two close five game matches enjoyed success when teaming up with Suleman Saleh, who had won two earlier matches for Civil Service, to claim victory in the doubles.
Highnam ‘A’ 8 v British Energy ‘B’ 2
Two valuable points for the away teams Tony Wauchope were the only success on a night were Highnam ‘B’ proved dominant. Three wins for the home teams Richard Maddrell and two wins apiece from James Dance and Jo Pigott were followed up with a further win in the doubles, ensuring a convincing victory for Highnam.
Division 3
Wotton 7 v Rudford ‘F’ 3
A first win of the season for Wotton in their home match against Rudford ‘F’ as Chris East lead the way with three wins and Alan Williams followed with two and Len Horwood with one. Dave Vye managed to win two of his games for the away team, on a night where all of his matches went the full distance including the doubles, which was won by the home team pairing of Williams and Horwood.
Redcliffe College 10 v Civil Service ‘C’ 0
Utter dominance was the order of the night as Redcliffe College took all of the points on offer. Richard Johnson, Vidas Rimkus and Andy Taylor were all in fine form and while Mike Gray did take two of his matches the full distance, the evening proved fruitless for Civil Service ‘C’.
Rudford ‘E’ 9 v Grange Baptist ‘A’ 1
There was certainly no ‘rustiness’ evident as Richard Spry won all three of his matches after an absence of two seasons from the game. Glyn Lloyd also won all three of his matches and was ably supported by Pete Humble who won a further two. Resistance for the away team came in the form of Alistair Wood who took all of his games the full distance but unfortunately only managed to win one of them on the night as Rudford ran out comfortable winners.
Division 4
Optimists ‘C’ 4 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘A’ 6
Two wins apiece for Optimists’ Matt Inman and Ben Roberts meant that victory in the doubles would prevent Sir Thomas Rich’s from inflicting upon them their first defeat of the season. However, this was not to be as Ian Kellie, the leading performer on the night with three wins, paired up with Janie Kirby to stage an impressive fight back from two games down, surviving four match points, to seal an impressive and hard fought victory for the away team.
Optimists ‘C’ 7 v Civil Service ‘D’ 3
In their second match of the week, Optimists bounced back in this re-arranged fixture to claim victory against friendly rivals Civil Service ‘D’. Fine play from all involved though honourable mention must go to Ben Roberts who remained undefeated during the course of the evening. Civil Service’s Hamza Bham and Phil Lewis with one win each on the night, proceeded to combine and clinch victory in the fifth game of the doubles. However, two wins apiece for Optimists’ Nick Walker and Matt Inman earlier in the evening were enough to ensure victory belonged to Optimists.
Optimists ‘C’ and Gloucester Civil Service ‘D’
Highnam ‘B’ 6 v Robinswood ‘A’ 4
Stewart Blencowe lead the way for Highnam as he won all three of his matches without the loss of a single game. Two further wins for Huw Darch and one more from Clare Bell ensured victory for the home team. Two wins for Robinswood’s Mark Wilding and one for Andy Noakes, who also paired up to claim a victory in the doubles, provided some valuable points for the away team.
Division 5
St Peters 4 v Rudford ‘G’ 6
Two wins for Rudford’s Luke Woodcliffe and one win for Phil Wallace were negated on the night by St Peters’ Sam Hobbs and Ben Hope who had two wins and one win respectively. Most notable performance came from Pete Rimmer, who lead Rudford to victory and remains undefeated this season after winning all of his matches during the course of the evening, even though he had a close five game match with Ben Hope.
Crypt ‘B’ 6 v Sir Thomas Rich’s ‘C’ 4
Three victories for the away teams Chris Green, including an impressive five game win against Crypts’ Ben Tegg, was not enough to sway the overall result on the night. Two wins each for Ben Tegg and Steve Parsons and a further win for Josh Roberts gave Crypts a one point lead as they went in to the doubles in the final match of the evening. Ben Tegg and Steve Parsons combined for the home team, taking the match in the fifth game by two points.
Crypt ‘D’ 4 v Crypt ‘C’ 6
Despite two close five game matches Adam Crabbe’s undefeated record remains intact this season. Matthew Skelding provided able support with two wins while Harry Mayo ensured victory in this derby fixture when beating Tim Smith in the fifth game of the penultimate match of the evening. The result could have been so different had the home teams David Holman, who had one victory on the night, been slightly more fortunate as he narrowly lost two close matches in the fifth game.
